In order to crochet you need to understand the language that is Crocheting. There are two types of terminology you may run into when working with your patterns; they are U.S. Terms and U.K. Terms.
U.S. VS. U.K. Terms
Below you will see the terms side by side. What is directly across from either term on the chart is what that stitch is in the opposite country.

If you are use to using U.S. terminology but using a pattern with U.K. terms and are required to work a Double Crochet you will actually be doing an American Single Crochet but it is considered a U.K. Double Crochet.
Can be confusing…I know BUT my reference below is here to help :).
